What inactive status means in Florida
Inactive status by itself is not a disciplinary finding, but the reason and remedy depend on whether the license is voluntary or involuntary. A sales associate may also be current but inactive because there is no active broker affiliation. In every case, the license must be active before the person performs licensed services.
- You can hold the license while you decide where to affiliate.
- You can study, interview brokerages, and prepare to start.
- You must reactivate before practicing or advertising services.
How your license becomes inactive
Most new agents start inactive right after they pass the state exam.
- You passed the exam but have not selected a broker.
- You requested voluntary inactive status at renewal.
- Your broker released you and you did not transfer in time.
- You missed a renewal requirement and became involuntary inactive.
Inactive vs active vs expired
Voluntary and involuntary inactive statuses are not interchangeable with null and void. Under section 475.183, an involuntarily inactive license expires after more than two years and then becomes null and void. A different, stricter rule applies when a sales associate misses the 45-hour post-licensing requirement at the first renewal: section 475.17 makes that license null and void at the deadline.
- Active: affiliated with a broker and allowed to practice.
- Voluntary inactive: you elected not to practice and continue renewing the inactive license.
- Involuntary inactive: the license was not renewed at the end of its license period.
- Null and void: the license has expired under the applicable statute and no longer authorizes practice.
How to reactivate your inactive Florida license
1) Confirm your status in the DBPR portal

First renewal is a special case: a Florida sales associate must complete 45 hours of post-licensing before the deadline, and missing it makes the license null and void rather than merely involuntarily inactive. After the first renewal, an involuntarily inactive license for 12 months or less generally requires at least 14 hours of continuing education; more than 12 but fewer than 24 months requires 28 hours of reactivation education.
3) Affiliate with a broker
Your new broker will initiate or approve the activation request in the DBPR system. Confirm you are listed under the correct office.

Fees vary based on timing and status, so check the DBPR portal for current amounts before submitting.
Deadlines to keep on your radar
For ordinary involuntary inactivity, 12 months is the education threshold and more than 24 months makes the license expire and become null and void. First-renewal post-licensing has no ordinary 24-month cure period: missing the 45-hour deadline makes a sales associate license null and void, subject only to any applicable statutory hardship relief.
