Rhode Island Real Estate Practice Exam

Rhode Island salesperson candidates take a General/National portion and a Rhode Island State portion during one computer-based appointment. The General portion includes 80 scored multiple-choice questions with 150 minutes allotted (2.5 hours). The Rhode Island State portion includes 50 scored multiple-choice questions with 90 minutes allotted (1.5 hours). Each portion may also include unscored pretest items (five on General, ten on State) that use exam time but do not affect your score. Pearson VUE reports a scaled score from 0 to 100 on each section; you need at least 70 scaled on both portions during the same visit. A strong General score cannot offset a State score below 70. Spanish-language delivery is available at physical test centers only when you select Spanish at scheduling. Reserve each exam part at least 24 hours ahead; walk-ins are not accepted.

Pearson VUE publishes national and Rhode Island state content outlines in Candidate Information Bulletin #094000. The state outline emphasizes Rhode Island General Laws and DBR rules rather than generic national summaries. Individual test forms may vary slightly within each category.

• Residential relationship disclosures (RIGL 5-20.6): agency relationships, buyer and seller representation duties, and required disclosure forms
• Fair housing and civil rights (RIGL 34-37-1): protected classes, prohibited practices, and Rhode Island fair housing enforcement
• Landlord-tenant and property management statutes: leases, security deposits, eviction procedures, and property management licensing rules
• Lead hazard mitigation and sales disclosure (216-RICR-50-15-3): lead disclosure requirements, lead hazard mitigation course rules, and real estate sales disclosure obligations
• Condominium sales, licensing, and Recovery Account: condominium resale rules, license renewal, continuing education, and Real Estate Recovery Account procedures

First-time Rhode Island candidates apply for a Real Estate Salesperson license after passing both exam sections. Review the current DBR application checklist and Pearson VUE handbook before applying because fees and forms can change.

• Complete 45 hours of DBR-approved salesperson pre-licensing coursework plus a separate three-hour lead poisoning and lead hazard mitigation course before scheduling Pearson VUE.
• Bring your education completion certificate to the test center; Pearson VUE will deny admission without proof of completed pre-licensing coursework.
• Register with Pearson VUE, pay the examination fee for each portion at scheduling ($53 General, $50 State as of the January 2026 handbook), arrive with two valid IDs whose names exactly match your registration, and pass both portions with 70 scaled on each during the same testing session.
• Apply for licensure with DBR within one year of passing both sections, submitting the original Pearson VUE score report, lead-course certificate, background check, and fees listed on the DBR salesperson application.
• Affiliate with a Rhode Island licensed broker after DBR issues your salesperson license; mutual recognition candidates from qualifying states may take only the Rhode Island State portion after DBR confirms eligibility.

If you fail either section, retake only the failed portion; passing results remain valid for one year while you complete the license application. After one failed OnVUE online attempt for a given part, DBR requires your next attempt at a physical test center. Changes or cancellations require 48 hours notice to avoid forfeiting the exam fee.
