The exam has a general (national) section with 80 scored multiple-choice items and an Idaho state-law section with 40 scored items. Each section may include five to ten unscored pretest questions that do not affect your result. You have four hours to complete the sitting and receive an official score report before leaving the test center. Pearson VUE reports scaled scores from 0 to 100 on each section, with a passing scaled score of 70 required on both the national and state portions.

You must complete 90 hours of IREC-certified pre-license education within three years before applying, pass both Pearson VUE exam sections with a scaled score of at least 70, complete fingerprinting through Pearson VUE, and submit a license application with the current individual fee. IREC also requires you to apply within one year of passing your first exam section and to hold E&O coverage before a broker activates you on active status.
Difficulty depends on preparation and whether you treat the national and state sections separately. You must pass both the 80-question national portion and the 40-question Idaho state portion in one four-hour sitting, each with a scaled score of at least 70. Candidates who struggle often under-prepare for IREC license law, trust accounts, and Idaho-specific property topics even when national concepts feel familiar.
Pearson VUE does not publish a fixed raw-answer miss count because each section is scored on a 0 to 100 scale after equating across exam forms. You need a scaled score of at least 70 on both the national and Idaho state sections. Study toward that scaled threshold on each portion instead of assuming a simple percentage of wrong answers.
IREC allows unlimited exam attempts as long as you register with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee each time. If you pass one section and fail the other, you may retake only the failed section within one year of the date you passed the first section. You must also submit your license application within that same one-year window, or both sections expire and you must retake the full exam.
The national section covers general real estate principles, practice, finance, contracts, valuation, and fair housing topics in the Pearson VUE national outline. The Idaho state section emphasizes IREC license law and rules, agency and brokerage relationships, Idaho principles and practices, and closing calculations, including trust accounts, advertising standards, water rights, and Idaho-specific property and recording concepts.
Pearson VUE charges $83 per exam attempt (confirm in handbook 091300 before scheduling). IREC lists a $135 individual salesperson application fee effective January 1, 2026. Fingerprint processing, course tuition, E&O insurance, and optional printed license certificates are separate charges. Payment is not accepted at the test center for the exam fee.
